For Faculty/Staff

The Office of Community Engagement encourages all FIU faculty to integrate service-learning into their courses.

• The Center for Advancement of Teaching offers a popular service-learning workshop focusing attention on the topic.

• Students often seek faculty guidance regarding volunteer opportunities. The university maintains a Community Partnerships Database of projects that have a strong community-engagement component. Please use this database when helping students identify an opportunity that will result in a positive experience for our student, the organization and our community.

For Students

We encourage our students to serve communities throughout South Florida, the nation and the world. Service learning is a great way to meet new people and make the most of your college experience. It will also help you increase job skills and knowledge at the same time that you’re working with community members, contributing to positive change.

• Service-Learning: FIU offers a variety of service learning programs at FIU:

Alternative Breaks (aB)
aB is one of FIU's largest service-led organizations. Each year Alternative Breaks selects more than 22 different locations across the globe to perform strong direct service towards many social issues affecting our global community. With more than 240 participants and 48 site leaders, Alternative Breaks is committed to changing the world one break at a time.

Academy of Leaders (AOL)
The Academy of Leaders is FIU's largest emerging leadership development program. It's a structured leadership development certification program for students. AOL teaches leadership competencies through educational seminars, experiential exercises, and practical application. AOL has grown into several tracks that provide leadership development for athletes, greeks and the FIU student community.

Leaders in Residence
"Leaders in Residence" is dedicated to exploring personal leadership styles and values experienced through a living/learning community. Through educational programs, mentoring experiences, community-service involvement and cooperative living, students will develop valuable lifelong skills.
