Allan RichardsAllan Richards, Associate Dean in FIU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) has been an FIU professor since 1997. He developed the SJMC's current computerized language skills testing and teaching program with a grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, and the SJMC's Writing Center with a grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation.

In 2002 he inaugurated the SJMC’s multimedia program, producing a number of student-based Web sites, including the popular FusedOnline. Richards, collaborating with The New York Times, inaugurated the first New York Times Hispanic Student Journalism Institute at the SJMC in January 2007.

One of the founders of the South Florida News Service (a partnership between SJMC students and South Florida’s three main newspapers) with the editors of The Miami Herald, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel and The Palm Beach Post, Richards teaches multimedia journalism, was a 2009 Kaiser Fellow for his Global Health Reporting on HIV/AIDS, and served as a judge for the Scripps Howard 2009 National Journalism Awards. His new book, Just an Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure (Hay House, Inc.), written with Dr. James L. D'Adamo, was published in April 2010. He has written more than a dozen medical science documentaries that have aired on The Discovery Channel and PBS.
