Dennis McCarthy, PhD
Dennis McCarthy is an Assistant Professor in the Occupational Therapy Department at Florida International University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and an adjunct faculty member of FIU’s Lehman Center for Transportation Research.
His research interests include enabling safe community mobility for seniors and the disabled, which includes screening and assessment of safe driving behaviors and performance, pedestrian safety, and the use of alternative forms of transportation (other than driving) that enable people to safely and effectively obtain needed goods and services and participate in activities within the community.
Dr. McCarthy’s projects have included research on driving assessment and screening tools; effectiveness of driver remediation; effects of infrastructure on driving behaviors; travel habits and preferences of South Florida seniors; effectiveness of a taxi voucher program to increase senior mobility; and the effects of driving cessation on caregivers of people with dementia. Project sponsors have included the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Federal Highway Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Florida Department of Transportation.
Dr. McCarthy received his Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Florida, a Masters degree in education from Florida Atlantic University, and an undergraduate degree in occupational therapy from Florida International University.
