Caryn Lavernia joined the Florida International University Engagement team in August 2015 as Assistant Vice President to continue the university’s legacy of creating triple win partnerships that benefit the community, public and private enterprise and FIU. Prior to this role, she helped lead City Year Miami from its founding in 2008 through years of exponential growth and development and a major leadership transition.

Caryn was born and raised in Miami and started her career in the local hospitality industry.  After eight successful years in that sector, where she focused on human resource management and organizational development, Caryn decided that service was her calling. She joined the U.S. Peace Corps in 2005 and served for three years in the small South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. She worked on numerous capacity building projects, including agribusiness, ecotourism development, and workforce readiness, in partnership with host country nationals to develop the country in a sustainable way.

Caryn is a member of Miami Fellows Class VIII; Leadership Miami’s Class of 2011; and City Year’s inaugural Lead Manager Class. She has served as a Leader Guide and Trainer for Volunteer Florida since 2010. She also serves on the boards of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida, Genesis Hopeful Haven Group Home, and was on the founding board of the Miami Mentoring Collaborative. Caryn is a two-time Panther having earned her MPA from the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs in 2013 and her bachelor’s degree from the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in 2001. Caryn has a deep commitment to service, especially promoting access to quality education for all youth and developing educated and capable future community leaders.
